Why Missions?

We recently had our annual Missions Conference at the Tampa Bay Presbyterian Church. It is always good to catch up with the missionaries we support. And it is also good to be encouraged to press on with the missions enterprise.
However, one might ask: Why missions? Why should my church or I be involved in missions?
There are many reasons for us to be involved in missions. I would like to list just three reasons for every Christian to be involved in missions by praying regularly, giving financially, and even participating in a short-term—or long-term—missions team.
First, we should be involved in missions because God commands us to be involved in missions. Jesus gave the Great Commission to his church when he said, “Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:18-20). Not every Christian is a front-line missionary. But every Christian plays a role in the missions enterprise by prayer and financial support. Every Christian can (and should) pray for his ministers and missionaries, for church planters and missions hospitals, for Bible translators and missionary educators. And every Christian can (and should) support financially the work of missions.
Second, we should be involved in missions because how else will the lost hear?
