Fear and the Resurrection of Jesus

By Rev. Freddy Fritz
From the April 2020 Trumpet

On the first Sunday after Jesus’ crucifixion, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to Jesus’ tomb. Suddenly, however, there was a great earthquake, which must have terrified the women. Then, an angel descended from heaven and rolled back the stone to Jesus’ tomb and sat on it. Surely, the women were trembling with fear at that point, wondering what in the world was going on. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said” (Matthew 28:5-6). The fear of the women was transformed into great joy.
Fear is common to all of us. We fear all kinds of things, such as darkness, loss of loved ones, loss of financial stability, health, and so on. At the present time, people all around the world fear a virus that is called “covid-19.” It is understandable that people fear it—and all other kinds of things as well.
The good news of this Easter is that the resurrection proves that Jesus is who he said he is. Jesus claimed to be God in human form. Jesus claimed to have power of disease, nature, sin, and death. His resurrection is the Father’s affirmation that his son Jesus is the Savior of sinners.
